Texas Public Radio is commemorating Black History Month with three special programs that showcase the talent and commitment of African-Americans who influenced our nation and shaped our culture. Listen to KSTX 89.1 FM throughout the month of February for this special programming.

February 4: Say It Plain: A Century of African-American Speeches

Booker T. WashingtonThe visceral impact of history’s great speechmakers is at the heart of Say it Plain, which highlights a selection of landmark sermons, speeches and broadcasts by remarkable African-American speakers. Say It Plain delves into a vibrant tradition of African-American oratory that connects figures who are different in style and ideology to create a vivid portrait of Black America.

February 6: Riverwalk Jazz: Women of the Harlem Renaissance

Billie HollidayIn Jazz Age Harlem, the rise of black culture produced talents like Langston Hughes and Duke Ellington. But this 'Black Renaissance' wasn't limited to men. Actress Carol Woods joins The Jim Cullum Jazz Band in this salute to Black History Month as they introduce the artistic, fascinating women that launched New York's great social revolution of the 1920s.

February 11: State of the Re:Union

Bayard RustinMLK Jr.’s “I have a Dream” speech has become the shorthand of the Civil Rights Movement, but we might never have heard it, if it weren’t for another man who has largely been forgotten by history: Bayard Rustin. In this special program, we explore the life and legacy of Mr. Rustin, a black, gay, Quaker who brought Gandhian non-violent protest to the Civil Rights movement in America.

February 18: Race and the Space Race

Mae JemisonThe Space Age began when America was going through a wrenching battle over Civil Rights. And because the heart of the old Confederacy was chosen as its base, NASA played an unintended role in civil rights history. Discover how people broke the color line at NASA through their stories of frustration and perseverance. Narrated by Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space, Race and the Space Race tells the unlikely story of civil rights and the space program.

Airs: Thursday, February 18 at 7 p.m. on KSTX 89.1 FM

 

February 27: In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement

Jennifer HudsonFrom the East Room of the White House, this one-hour special features highlights from a concert hosted by President and Mrs. Obama in honor of Black History Month. Participants include Natalie Cole, Bob Dylan, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, John Mellencamp, Smokey Robinson, Seal, the Blind Boys of Alabama, the Howard University Choir and others. Morgan Freeman and Queen Latifah will serve as emcees for this concert which will feature songs from the Civil Rights Movement as well as readings from famous Civil Rights speeches and writings. The President will make opening remarks at this concert held in the East Room.

February 9: KSTX Town Hall: Race

As San Antonio's population rapidly increases, it's also becoming more racially diverse.  But but what are we doing to strengthen community ties across racial lines and embrace cultural differences?  Join us February 9 at St. Philip's College for our KSTX Town Hall on race.  We'll have a positive discussion on how we can embrace diversity in our community.  Click here for details, or visit the Town Hall page for past topics.
