Last week I introduced you to the program that encourages art students’ interests and abilities. This week I’ll introduce you to a student benefiting from the program.

Blue Star Mosaic recruits talented students from area high schools to join their after school program. One of those students, Yenifer Gaviña, detailed the time commitment, "from 4:30-7:30 and during summer from 1:30-5:30.”

I asked her if that was a big sacrifice of her time.
Tue, 22 Jul 2014 16:12:10 +0000 Jack Morgan 35479 at http://tpr.org Blue Star Student Talks About Working In Mosaic Program Things Get HOT At Bihl Haus Arts This Friday http://tpr.org/post/things-get-hot-bihl-haus-arts-friday
It’s an art opening with a very unusual premise. First, there’s its title: "HOT."

“Hot is just an amazing exhibit and series of additional events that surround the idea of climate change," said Kellen McIntyre, Bihl Haus Arts executive director.

Regarding climate change, she had a nagging thought:

“What could we do in San Antonio? How could we bring artists together?” McIntyre said.

So she appointed a curator to gather art on that theme.

“I’m working with Raul Castellanos, who is an amazing San Antonio Artist,” McIntyre said.
Mon, 21 Jul 2014 21:26:29 +0000 Jack Morgan 35438 at http://tpr.org Things Get HOT At Bihl Haus Arts This Friday Ballet San Antonio's High Profile Hire http://tpr.org/post/ballet-san-antonios-high-profile-hire
Ballet San Antonio has hired a high-visibility retiring dancer with the objective of continuing to elevate the ballet.

“We are so thrilled to bring on a new artistic staff member: Amy Fote," said Ballet San Antonio Artistic Director Gabriel Zertuche. "She’s coming to us as a retired principal dancer from Houston Ballet.”

I asked Zertuche about her job responsibilities.
Mon, 21 Jul 2014 19:09:46 +0000 Jack Morgan 35424 at http://tpr.org Ballet San Antonio's High Profile Hire Briscoe Mixes Art, Food, Music, Dance And Drinks http://tpr.org/post/briscoe-mixes-art-food-music-dance-and-drinks

The Briscoe Western Art Museum is inviting the public to their art-strewn courtyard. The party is called Summer Sol Fest, and as for party places, the McNutt Courtyard off of the Briscoe is well-positioned.

“We now have several sculptures out there, it’s a beautiful space," said the Briscoe’s Jennifer Wijangco.

And it's not just beautiful; it's shady. Massive oaks cool the courtyard and the western art that’s positioned all through it.
Fri, 18 Jul 2014 20:43:30 +0000 Jack Morgan 35314 at http://tpr.org Briscoe Mixes Art, Food, Music, Dance And Drinks Massive Stone Art Installation Taking Shape On Mission Reach http://tpr.org/post/massive-stone-art-installation-taking-shape-mission-reach
The Mission Reach continues with its massive, multi-year transformation. I was there Friday morning to get an update after heavy overnight rains had swollen the river. The artist who is creating the artfully imagined portal at Mission Concepción is Stacy Levy.

“This park lies right between the San Antonio River and Mission Concepción," she said. "So my job is to create a place that is talking about both the river and the mission.”

The installation is massive: nearly 200 ft. long and 90 ft. wide.
Fri, 18 Jul 2014 18:36:37 +0000 Jack Morgan 35309 at http://tpr.org Massive Stone Art Installation Taking Shape On Mission Reach Gemini Ink, Bibliotech Using Arts Grant For Digital Placemaking http://tpr.org/post/gemini-ink-bibliotech-using-arts-grant-digital-placemaking

A modest grant may play a no-so-modest role in the local arts scene. A National Endowment for the Arts grant has been awarded to Gemini Ink and Bibliotech. As Gemini Ink's Executive Director Sheila Black noted, it's not a massive amount of money.

“It’s $25,000, which is small for this funding source, but we’re thrilled," Black said. "The focus of the grant is creative placemaking.”

I asked Black exactly what creative placemaking is.
Thu, 17 Jul 2014 20:40:09 +0000 Jack Morgan 35251 at http://tpr.org Gemini Ink, Bibliotech Using Arts Grant For Digital Placemaking Broadway Dynamo Seth Rudetsky Sets Woodlawn Performance http://tpr.org/post/broadway-dynamo-seth-rudetsky-sets-woodlawn-performance
A Broadway comedian is coming to San Antonio with his one-man show. And I've got to tell you, Seth Rudetsky talks faster than anyone I’ve interviewed.

“You know, I talk about how I loved Broadway as a toddler but I think they think I was exaggerating like my mother. My mother exaggerates everything," he said.

The performer played piano for ten years in "The Phantom of the Opera" production and he told me this short story:

“I heard something clatter next to my piano. As it turns out it was the phantom’s mask,” Rudetsky said.
Thu, 17 Jul 2014 19:40:08 +0000 Jack Morgan 35245 at http://tpr.org Broadway Dynamo Seth Rudetsky Sets Woodlawn Performance New YOSA Executive Director Looks To Reach More Kids http://tpr.org/post/new-yosa-executive-director-looks-reach-more-kids

One of San Antonio’s iconic cultural attributes gets a new leader, although to call him new might be a slight exaggeration.

“I’m really excited about it. I’ve been interim director for the past year,” said Brandon Henson, who has worked at Youth Orchestras of San Antonio for quite some time but is now their executive director.

“(We've) got a lot of exciting opportunities ahead with YOSA," he said.

Turns out Henson has an interesting backstory himself.
Wed, 16 Jul 2014 20:55:32 +0000 Jack Morgan 35196 at http://tpr.org New YOSA Executive Director Looks To Reach More Kids San Antonio Film Festival Entering Its 20th Year http://tpr.org/post/san-antonio-film-festival-entering-its-20th-year

Lovers of film take note: The San Antonio Film Festival happens July 28-August 3.

“It’s seven days of cinema. We have about 70-plus films, and about half the filmmakers will be in attendance," said Adam Rocha, executive director of the festival.

Noting that the festival is in its 20th year, I noted that the festival is no longer a teenager. He laughed and continued.

“This is our 20th anniversary; it’s growing, growing, growing," Rocha said. "And I can’t wait. It’s a music series that pits hot summer nights against cool, live jazz.

“Nothing could be better on a summer night," said Arpace’s Francesca Rattray. And what she’s talking about is The Hardbop Project, music inspired by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, playing live on the third floor rooftop of Artpace.
Tue, 15 Jul 2014 21:27:56 +0000 Jack Morgan 35126 at http://tpr.org Hot Nights And Cool, Rooftop Jazz At Artpace
