The San Antonio Symphony announced today that Jack Downey, a local businessman, fundraising consultant and retired Air Force officer, will take the helm as the organizations new CEO.

The walls surrounding the Tobin Center construction site are now adorned with paintings created by SAISD students to serve as a tribute to the vision of the performing arts center as construction continues.

Omar Leos, the district’s visual and theater arts coordinator, said 280 students helped design 36 4 ft. by 4 ft. panels that now line the construction zone

"Instead of having just a regular fence blocking the construction site, there’ll be public art displayed by students of San Antonio ISD," Leos said.

Tobin Center Reaches New Heights With Final Steel Beam

A five-ton 48-foot purple steel beam spotted with signatures and adorned with the Texas and U.S. flags now sits on top of the Tobin Center. Bruce Bugg, chair of the Bexar County Performing Arts Center Foundation said the topping of the structure is the end of one phase of the reconstruction.

The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts is being marketed as the home for San Antonio’s artistic community. What was once Municipal Auditorium is now just a shell as the rest of the theater is re-built from the ground up.

San Antonio Symphony and Musicians Reach Contract Agreement

The San Antonio Symphony was one of many across the country to be in contract negotiations and is now one of the few to finally come to an agreement. Symphony Board Chair Dennert Ware said the collective bargaining agreement will extend the length of the performance season.

"We're slowly increasing the weeks from 27 to 29; we think that's a positive step," Ware said. "We made some very modest increases in salary."
