UTSA Names Student Center In Honor Of H-E-B

UTSA has renamed its student center the "H-E-B University Center" in thanks for the company's extensive contributions to the university's capital campaign.

Last week UTSA announced the receipt of a $5 million gift and the creation of the H-E-B Faculty Research Excellence Fund, which brings H-E-B’s overall support to more than $7 million.

The $5 million was matched by other private gifts to total $10 million for endowed professorships and chairs in all of UTSA’s nine colleges. It is the largest private challenge gift in UTSA history.

Slimming Down More Than A Resolution For Showdown Participants

As the second edition of HEB’s 16-week Slimdown Showdown begins, the 25 competitors participating this year are taking physicals through the Methodist Health System.

This week is Fit Camp where the contestants attend classes on healthy living and do tests to see where they are physically. On the first day, 34-year-old Juan Ramirez of San Antonio is taking a stress test on a treadmill.

Ramirez said the $10,000 grand prize is not the main goal, instead he wants to lose about 60 lbs. and get a better handle on his lifestyle.

Nutrition Labels Hope to Encourage Healthy Choices

HEB is the first grocery chain in Texas to roll out a new nutrition labeling system on items in its stores to assist people in making healthy food choices.

Following guidelines from the USDA, color coded icons appear next to the prices of many items on HEB shelves, to indicate the health factors of a particular food. HEB has piloted this program for about a year, and it’s now being rolled out company wide.

HEB's Slimdown Showdown finishes nearly 1,000 lbs. thinner

HEB’s Slimdown Showdown came to close this week as 24 contestants selected from all over Texas lost nearly 956 pounds collectively during the 16-week competition.

Slimdown winner Allison Spangler is a school teacher at Stevens High School in San Antonio; she lost 46 pounds during the competition.

"My life is completely different," said Spangler. "I feel fantastic and this is only my half-way point."

Spangler said the lower weight has given her more energy and a healthier lifestyle.
