San Antonio’s poet laureate is on her way this week to Bordeaux, France, to perform at the International Conference on Interlanguage.

Dr. Carmen Tafolla’s poetry has been heard in countries all over the world, but she said she was invited to the linguistic conference based on her mastery of code-switching. She says this is the natural progression of language, and it happens all the time:

Tonight, the U.S. Poet Laureate is the featured speaker at UTSA’s Creative Writing Series; Natasha Trethewey is expected to read from her Pulitzer Prize-winning poetry collection.

Trethewey was serving as the poet laureate for the State of Mississippi when she was selected as the 19^th poet laureate of the United States in June. Her first poems, titled, “Domestic Work,” won the inaugural 1995 Cave Canem poetry prize. Her third collection, "Native Guard,” was awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize.
