Pre-K Board Seeking Developers For Remaining Learning Centers

Although Pre-K 4 SA's first two model education centers aren't yet open, the board of directors is now submitting a request for proposals from developers to begin looking at two additional sites on the east and west sides of town.

The remaining education centers will fulfill the requirements of the eight-year Pre-K 4 SA program, which is expected to see 22,400 students over the initial life of the program.

This August the first two centers, one on the Northwest Side and the other on the Southeast Side, will open.

Quarterly Grant Helps Nonprofit Assist Low-Income Families

San Antonio nonprofit Merced Housing Texas has received a $200,000 grant to help low-income families in its housing developments and throughout the city.

For the next two years the group will receive $25,000 every quarter to help facilitate its programs. Merced operates nearly 1,700 units for low income people across the state in Corpus Christi, Fort Worth, San Antonio and other cities but are based here.

Federal officials visited San Antonio's East Side this week to guage how reinvestment dollars are shaping housing and education needs.

500 Fires Investigated By Arson Bureau Last Year, 260 Set Intentionally

The San Antonio Fire Department held an open house to the media this week to detail what it does to determine whether or not a fire is considered an act of arson.

The fire department has 17 arson investigators, who the past two years have been called out to more than 1,200 fires. Captain Chris Casals, with the San Antonio Fire Department's Arson Bureau, said his division exists to determine the cause and origin of a fire.

Housing Authority Awarded $29 Million HUD Grant For Eastside Development

The Housing and Urban Development's Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant will help revitalize the 71-year-old Wheatley Courts housing complex on the Eastside. 248 families call the courts home, where the average income is only $7,500 per year.

San Antonio Housing Authority President Lourdes Castro-Ramirez said the complex will be completely rebuilt.

New Housing Development Another Piece of East Side Redevelopment

Phase two of a $29.4 million mixed-income housing development will be constructed on the East Side off I-35 and Walters, near Woodard Park.

The money, coming from the City of San Antonio, the federal government's Department of Housing and Urban Development and the San Antonio Housing Authority, will build 208 units in total: 49 public housing units, 113 affordable units, and 46 market rate units.

Wheatley Sports Complex Needs Teams to Use Facilities

The Wheatley Heights Sports Complex opened up on San Antonio's East Side at the beginning of the year. Bexar County, the city and the Eastside Christian Action Group partnered to offer a place where teams can come play ball.

“It’s a wonderful amateur sports facility right in the heart of the East Side that provides a wonderful place for recreation for our youth,” said District 2 Councilwoman Ivy Taylor.
