November 28, 2011 · Dan Skinner talks with Sylvia Bernstein about sustainable food production through aquaponics. This type of gardening uses only 10 percent of the water required by traditional soil based gardening. Fish waste is used to fertilize the plants, and the plants filter the water which is then pumped back into the fish tank creating a nearly closed loop system. The fish in the system can be grown for food, or can be strictly ornamental.
Aquaponic gardens can be scaled according to your needs and can be constructed from recycled materials. You could start a system for as little as $20 and then grow the operation as big as you want. Since the systems do not use soil, they can produce food in locations that normally would not support a garden, such as some urban environments.
