January 19, 2009 · Urban-15 was selected to drum and dance in the official inaugural parade down Pennsylvania Avenue.
On this Monday before the big day, the group still has a lot of work to do to prepare for the event. They are planning to wear large elaborate costumes covered in electric lights in the parade. The outfits are so big they had to be hauled from San Antonio in pieces and they’ll be assembled now that the group is in the D.C. area.
That’s going to be a lot of work; the final assembly for the costumes is at the parade site.
But there are still some questions about what the tight inauguration security officials will allow. Urban-15 director George Cisneros meets with FBI officials later today to discuss the situation and try to get the process approved.
Later tonight Urban-15 is scheduled to perform at the big Texas inaugural event – the blacktie and boots ball.
Texas Public Radio's David Martin Davies will be joining Urban-15 on their journey to the inauguration. He’ll be filing reports and blogging along the way for the San Antonio Express-News and TPR. You can also follow the trip on Twitter. |
