March 10, 2009 · This Saturday, downtown San Antonio will transform into a giant canvas to show off the city's creative community. It will be the second year for Luminaria and San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger has a message for the tens of thousands of people who attended last year, "you aint seen nothing yet."
Hardberger says this year's Luminaria will double with a thousand artists and 40 nonprofits taking part. "We are going to have more artists, musicians, dancers and writers this year and we are going to be taking up more space downtown," Hardberger told a crowd Monday in front of the Alamo. Co-chair of Luminara, Marise McDermott, called Hardberger "the arts and parks mayor" because Luminaria was his idea and he was able to push funding for it through city hall.
One of the thousand participants in Luminaria is San Antonio celebrated author Carmen Tafolla. She will be calling on the crowd to write a community poem. "People can contribute a couple of words, a few lines or even an entire verse. We'll have some on-the-spot editors and performers," said Tafolla.
Most of the activity will center on Alamo Plaza, but across the city, museums and galleries will have Luminaria special events and exhibits.
