March 13, 2009 · It’s a cold and wet day in San Antonio – not ideal for a bicycle ride. But that didn’t stop riders with Soldier Ride from taking to the streets. Most of the cyclists in the group were wounded in Afghanistan and Iraq. Many lost limbs or are still recovering from related injuries. Major Dave Underwood says the rides help build morale.
“For a group of guys that have been very active throughout their lives – they’ve been recently wounded – this is a chance for them to get out and really find out what they’re still capable of doing. The other piece of it is - it gets you away from the hospital – you’re able to really get out and have fun,” said Underwood.
Soldier Ride is sponsored by the Wounded Warrior Project – a non-profit group assisting injured service member for nearly five years. Underwood himself is one those wounded soldiers. He narrowly survived an explosion in Iraq.
“A bomb was set up in a window of a house – blew out – went through my arm. Lost my arm – took off the front of my left leg – four days later I was at Walter Reed – it took them about six weeks to put me back together. I got out of the hospital on the 4th of March, 2008 – did my first soldier ride – the end of April 2008,” said Underwood.
These wounded warriors rode in Austin earlier in the week. On Saturday, they’ll be in Corpus Christi – raising awareness and spreading their message of hope.
