Alamo Tea Party Brings Out Crowd

1:17

April 15, 2009 · Former rock star Ted Nugent gave the tea protest crowd an early thrill with a warm up guitar solo of the National Anthem and some word of encouragement. “You are Texans – perfect,” Nugent said. That observation brought forth a roar from the crowd. “You are at the Alamo where they drew a line in the sand,” said the right wing rocker. And again the crowd responded with a thunderous rejoinder.

The Alamo was a back drop to the tea protest. The crowd wasn’t allowed on the Alamo’s grounds. Instead the thousand plus gathering took over Alamo Plaza. They bore signs that targeted President Barack Obama and called for Texas secession from the Union.

Viki Craven drove to the protest from Huntsville. She had a homemade sign showing the U.S. Constitution in tatters and asked Obama to stop shredding the document. “He may have a mandate to govern, but he does not have a mandate to tear up the Constitution. Where does he get the right to just spend money like this?” she said.

Phil Gray from Houston was wearing a native American headdress and carried a burlap sack labeled “TEA.” “We wanted the biggest tea bag. And we are all going to get together and basically do our war whoop,” said Gray. Gray then turned to his friends who were also wearing headdresses. “Ready?” he asked. And they began an energetic high pitched warble.

Gray said he was happy to see such a big crowd at the Alamo protest and he hopes it sends a message to Washington D.C.
