Early Voting is underway for the primary elections across Texas. In Bexar County voter turn out is surprising officials. Texas Public Radio’s David Martin Davies has the story.
February 17, 2010 · Going into the early voting period, election officials didn’t know what to expect in terms of participation.
Bexar County Elections Administrator Jacquelyn Callanen says it looks like folks are eager to cast their ballot.
“We’re having a robust turn out. We’re really pleased and surprised. We’ve had almost four thousand people vote and we were expecting about two thousand people,” she said.
Callanen said her election staff was able to deal with the unexpected surge in voters.
But why the increase?
“Realistically, just listening to our partners in the media, I think it’s going to be the governor’s race that are driving a lot of these local people into the polls,” said Callanen.
Callanen also speculates that the last Texas political primary was a presidential barn burner and set participation records across the state.
It’s possible that some people are still fired up and getting into the primary voting habit.
Early voting ends Feb 26. Election day is March 2. |
