There are essentially two views of Puccini. To his admirers he is one of the most beloved, most lyrical and at times moving composers of the modern period -- and successful beyond anyone’s wildest imaginings.

Detractors, however, have a different view. For all the dramatic (or melodramatic) force of his music and his undeniable lyric gift, finally he is enthralled by the mob. San Antonio has a share of specialized vocational schools that feed into local industries, such as the cooperative program between the Alamo Colleges and the aerospace industry, but some say that overall, a college-oriented culture has pushed vocational training in public schools aside.

The City of San Antonio’s Inner City Reinvestment/Infill Policy for several years has focused on reinvesting in neighborhoods, businesses and properties, particularly in urban areas that have gone untouched for decades.

But now the program is expanding, and District 5 Councilman David Medina couldn’t be more excited.

The Northside ISD School Board has voted to implement the last phase of a ten year project installing cameras in all of its schools. The district's elementary schools will now be placed under the monitor of digital cameras.

Northside's middle and high schools already have security cameras installed; those were approved in 2004 and 2007 through bond packages. The 2010 bond package called for $20 million to add them to elementary schools.

Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union presented $150,000 to the Alamo Colleges Foundation for an endowed scholarship to be named after its former president and CEO Randy M. Smith, who now serves as an advisor to the credit union’s board.

The Alamo Colleges Foundation provides scholarships and additional funding for district programs.

Marching band will fill Boerne Champion High School Auditorium

Incorporating original compositions and soul-infused interpretations of top 40 hits, group performances ranges from colorful, choreographed routines to heavy doses of drum riffs and cadences.

Brahms Fest continues Saturday night at OLLU

Voices, piano, and dance all come together at the Brahms Festival this weekend with Opera Piccola's Gypsy Love.  Two sets of Gypsy songs and the New Lovesong Waltzes will be performed with a quartet of singers.

The Ballet Arts School will interpret these songs, with original choreography.  

The West African nation of Mali has seen instability and violence since March of 2012 when a military coup overthrew the government of President Amadou Toumani Touré. Since then, the violence has escalated as Islamic extremists have joined the fighting and further divided the country into North and South.

This month France announced their intervention due to the rapid escalation of violence over the last few months, and the United States is now helping with operational support.
