What Do You Want Your Lawmakers To Accomplish?

State lawmakers who begin meeting in Austin on Tuesday have agendas they plan to pursue.  Some Texans have their wish lists as well.  What issues do you want your Texas legislators to tackle during the 140-day session?  Texas Public Radio wants to hear from you.   Here’s what some of you are telling us:

Tomorrow, when the Texas House of Representatives gavels in for its 140-day session, members are expected to elect Rep. Joe Straus III of San Antonio to a fourth term as Speaker. 

A distraught parent, who had barricaded himself with his ill son in the critical care unit of the Tomball Regional Medical Center, in Harris County, Texas, has surrendered after negotiators talked him out of it. The hospital in the Houston metropolitan area was in lockdown for several hours Saturday night and there were partial evacuations. The county’s High Risk Operation Unit and SWAT teams were present. It was earlier thought to be a hostage situation and reports indicated that the man had taken two people hostage, but the sheriff’s office later clarified that it was a distraught parent and the matter was resolved without injury.

Update, 1/26/15: Due to outside circumstances, including potentially heavy rains this weekend, Texas Public Radio made the difficult decision today to cancel this weekend’s “Big Game” event.

Two same-sex couples, who began their relationship in San Antonio and later filed a lawsuit against Texas’ ban on gay marriage, have presented their case before a panel of judges at the U.S. 5th Circuit Court in New Orleans. They are also speaking out, and asking that all gay couples in Texas flood the Internet with the story of their relationships and the challenges they face, related to the state’s ban.
