Texas House Candidate From El Paso Says She Was Attacked Outside Her Home

El Paso Democrat Lyda Ness-Garcia, who is challenging state Rep. Marissa Márquez for her seat in the Texas House, told police she was attacked outside her home by two people.

Ness-Garcia said the attackers told her, "You better hope you don't win" and threatened her family's safety.

In a statement, Ness-Garcia writes:

“The attackers made clear that their motives were political, but because this is an active law enforcement matter, I will not go in to further details as to the nature of the attack.”

Symphony of the Hills
Full House Productions

The Symphony of the Hills plays Thursday night in Kerrville. I spoke to Jay Dunnahoo, conductor and artistic director of the symphony to find out more about the concert with an interesting title.

“Storm and Stress—Symphonic Adventures," Dunahoo said. "As the title implies, there are some storms and there is some stress. We built this theme around the pieces they’re playing.”

The pieces they’re playing are stormy and stressful, but in a good symphonic kind of way.

The Bexar County Appraisal District is being sued at a record pace this year. Appraisal districts tell you what your house is worth, its "fair market worth," which essentially tells you how much you owe in taxes. Property owners that feel they deserve to pay less can sue. The amount of property under dispute is worth $10 billion and growing.

Bexar County and San Antonio area.
Texas Almanac 2014-2015

Unprecedented urban sprawl in Northwest Bexar County has officials pulling out their strategies for infrastructure improvements to do a  better job of keeping up with the growth. The first part of the county’s plans were unveiled at a public meeting Monday evening.

The attraction of no city taxes and lower home prices has lured thousands of new residents to densely-constructed subdivisions in a short period of time. Some experts have compared the growth to a city the size of Kerrville.

The latest Air Force sexual assault case might have stayed "cold" forever had it not been for a deeper investigation into older, unreported cases. An Article 32 hearing was presented Monday at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland on new cases stemming from the 1990s.

The 34 sexual misconduct cases that have played out in Lackland courtrooms for the past two to three years prompted investigators to look back 10 years to see if other cases remained unreported.

Greg Abbott Refers Battleground Texas Investigation to Bexar County DA

While the Texas attorney general’s office has opted out of investigating the Democratic organizing group Battleground Texas, officials with the group called the allegations a partisan attack and said they fully comply with the law.

Attorney General Greg Abbott recused his office from a possible investigation that follows accusations and concern from elected officials like Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst. The San Antonio office of Battleground Texas is accused of data harvesting -- allegedly keeping phone numbers from voter registration cards.

CineFestival 2014 in action at the Guadalupe Theater.
Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center

CineFestival is based out of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center and began last week, running through Saturday.

"It’s been going for 36 years, so it’s the longest and original Latino film festival" said CineFestival Director Jim Mendiola. "First, it’s the only place in town you’ll see the latest and best independent Latino films and narratives and documentaries in one place. And it’s actually a place where you can actually meet the filmmakers because pretty much every major film that we show we bring the filmmakers in, so there’s a Q&A session afterwards."

The University of Texas at Austin/Texas Tribune poll showed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis was down by 5 points in October, but this month’s poll shows a wider 11-point margin between her and Republican frontrunner Greg Abbott.

Professor Jim Henson with the University of Texas at Austin’s Texas Politics Project said there is something else to note.

"We’re seeing a bit of shrinkage in the undecided numbers in the state level general election numbers," Henson said.
