The Alamo Colleges recently set the stage to remove majors from their associates degrees, prompting outrage from a group of vocal students and parents. The decision was made by presidents and vice-chancellors of the five Alamo Colleges: Palo Alto College, Northwest Vista College, St. Phillip's College and San Antonio College.

6 dead and 43 students missing from a protest in the town of Iguala in the state of Guerrero have spurred a nation to protest.

The protest on the night of September 26th has since resulted in the mayor and his wife taking flight, the implication of the state governor and the complicity of state and local law enforcement in the possible deaths of the students.

I ask Jesus de la Torre, a local artist and teacher, and the co-founder of Colectivo Cultural, an organization set up to preserve and celebrate Mexican culture, to explain Dia de los Muertos to those not raised celebrating it.

“It’s confused with Halloween. Halloween is about ghouls and goblins. Dia de los Muertos is about celebrating life, not death. Yes, we’re honoring people who have passed away. But we’re remembering the wonderful things that they’ve done.”

It’s going to be a really big deal.

From time immemorial, Hindus have celebrated Diwali, the “Festival of Lights,” sometime between the middle of October to mid-November each year. This year, the Alamo City is taking that celebration forward, with a fete at the Alamo Plaza being billed as the biggest of its kind in the country. 

It’s called Diwali, the Festival of Lights, and Martha Henry, with the City of San Antonio’s International Relations Office, tells us it’s “a triumph of good over evil.”

The way people select which university they go to has changed. Schools, in fact, are discovering the race to bring in the best and brightest has become increasingly competitive. Consequently colleges and universities are learning to adapt, and one of the ways they are doing that is marketing themselves and connecting with potential students.
