The city's governance committee will soon be considering a ban on single-use plastic bags -- bags you would use at the grocery store, take-out bags and bags at several retailers.
According to District 7 Councilman Cris Medina, the city spends $1.3 million cleaning up discarded bags. The threat to the environment from the bags, which you currently cannot recycle anywhere but at retail-based bins, was the main concern of city leaders and one community advisory board.
The combined vacancy rate downtown is 29 percent according to Centro San Antonio, a nonprofit dedicated to helping revitalize the urban center.
Around the city center large historic buildings stand empty. Large urban tracts of land around the city hold broken down buildings, like the abandoned Lone Star Brewery on the Mission Reach -- large empty lots are all that remain of bulldozed houses dotting San Antonio's East Side.
Members of the San Antonio Potters Guild have been hard at work for months, creating thousands of bowls to benefit SAMMinistries this weekend.
For months now, pottery students Linda Perez and Deb Ferris and a dedicated group of fellow potters have been crafting bowls of different shapes and sizes to benefit San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries.
“This is a 12-hour process,” said Perez. “You change the ratio of air and gas so that reduction occurs two times during the firing.”
The San Antonio-Bexar County Metropolitan Planning Organization is in the midst of its second round of public meetings to plan for the next 25 years of regional transportation needs.
With new census numbers bringing in large populations from surrounding areas, regional road planning is necessary to accommodate all the expected traffic growth from an additional 1.5 million residents by 2040.
After years of disuse, the vintage 1926 Aztec Theater fronting St. Mary’s and Commerce Streets downtown, has now been re-imagined and completely re-modeled. But it almost didn’t happen that way.
“This was almost condemned, and this building almost came down and became a hotel,” said Sam Panchevre of popular restaurant and live music venue Sam’s Burger Joint fame. He describes what he's done at the Aztec.
"It’s an adaptive re-use of old architecture," he said.
One of District 9 City Councilman Joe Krier's goals has been safer streets and he recently announced several initiatives to increase driver and pedestrian awareness following the death of a nine-year-old girl.
Tatyana Babineaux was struck on Jan. 15 walking by herself on the way to school when a driver hit her, then fled the scene, in the 1700 block of Braesview.
San Antonio theater-goers now have a huge variety of venues from which to choose. I spoke to Overtime Theater’s Artistic Director Kyle Gillette, and he differentiates their objective this way.
“Devoted entirely to original works. And I really focus on choosing work that is both innovative and accessible,” he said.
There will be no Broadway hits at the Overtime — these are plays written by current playwrights, mostly local. The Overtime is at 1203 Camden Street on the other side of I-35 from Carlos Cortez’s Grotto, in the Museum Reach.
