Could the hospital actually be the third leading cause of death in the country? That is what a recent study estimates  in the Journal of Patient Safety, pegging the number of deaths between 210,000 and 440,000. If this study's findings are accepted -- the former number being closer to 100,000 deaths per year -- they point to a critical issue.

With Congress waffling on whether it will adopt a budget or issue a continuing resolution by next Tuesday, the Pentagon is preparing for the worst.

Joint Base San Antonio spokesman Brent Boller said Joint Base San Antonio officials are following Department of Defense orders that were issued by the office of management and budget to plan for an orderly shutdown.

Texas Democrats Speak Out Against Attempt To Shut Down Federal Government

Texas Democrats are taking aim at U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott over the threat of government shutdown.

During a conference call, state Sen. Leticia Van De Putte of San Antonio spoke out against Cruz' efforts to "defund Obamacare," which may lead to a government shutdown.

"If he does that how long will a shutdown last?" Van De Putte said. "I mean, can we take a week? Maybe. But once you get past two weeks you start having major impact into to Texas families."

Local Legislators Urge Voters To Support Prop 6 Water Project Amendment On Nov. Ballot

The Bexar County Commissioners Court and legislative delegation are urging voters to support a state constitutional amendment that would fund water projects for the state.

Commissioners and legislators used a hot sunny day to ask for support for the creation of a State Water Implementation Fund, which is on this year's Nov. 5 ballot as Proposition 6.

“The time to address our state water problems is now before the faucets run dry,” said state Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon, D-San Antonio, who along with house colleges urged voters to vote in favor of Prop 6.

SAWS To Ask For $2.59 Rate Increase For Average Water Customer

The San Antonio Water System has announced its proposed rate increase for customers and leaders with the utility will soon approach the city council members for their consideration.

SAWS wants an increase of 5.1 percent -- about $2.59 to the average monthly bill -- to fund new water sources and address wastewater compliance initiatives that the Environmental Protection Agency require.

A poll put out by the Kaiser Health Group shows doctors are the most trusted source for information about the Affordable Care Act for Americans, but that’s not where people are getting their information.

The state’s leading medical association has a new educational website related the federal health exchange to help provide more information called "Hey, Doc."

Youth Orchestras Of San Antonio Looking To Do Más For Area Kids

The Youth Orchestras of San Antonio YOSA have created a new program that could change young peoples’ lives. Music director Troy Peters characterizes their general purpose this way.

"YOSA is devoted to changes kids’ lives through music and we do that primarily through opportunities to play in large musical ensembles," Peters says.

The new program is called YOSA Más and allows young people of lesser means to join the orchestra despite not having the money needed. The program is being handled through the Edgewood School District.

Lackland Photographer Charged With Sex Crimes Involving High School Students

An investigating officer is hearing the government build a case against a Lackland airman accused of sex crimes with local ROTC students. The Article 32 hearing could result in a charge of rape against the airman.

Airman First Class Nathan Wilson-Crow of the 3rd Combat Camera Squadron is accused of playing inappropriate "truth or dare" games with O’Connor High School students who were on an ROTC camping trip in Rocksprings last April.

Re-Imagining Payday Lending In San Antonio

District 1 Councilman Diego Bernal has led the payday lending reform charge in San Antonio.

  Faith-based organization Together for the City is about to launch a new alternative to payday lending that the group hopes will help financially-strapped families get back on their feet. The one-year-old group also plans to carve out a variety ways to serve the community.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Linda Hardberger asked the group to help Green Spaces Alliance promote and build more community gardens throughout the city.
