Fiesta involves kings, queens and other pseudo royalty, but even the city’s light-hearted 18-day celebration needs some satire on itself. Cornyation is the annual spoof on the Fiesta Coronation where the famous and political are lampooned in on-stage skits.

At its core Cornyation is a stage performance: 300 volunteers, 6,000 audience members, poignant political gaffes, campy controversial catastrophes and tacky troubling topics. It's a three-night performance conducted each year during the Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of Fiesta.

The Source: Fuel Spill Into San Antonio River Leaves Questions

Earlier in the month a jet fuel spill from the Calumet Specialty Products refinery left the community asking questions about the safety of the plant. The second in two months, the operator announced changes to the railcar loading area and other upgrades to prevent future spills.

Education Group Urges House Panel To Create Achievement District For Low-Rated Schools

The Texas House Committee on Public Education is looking at what can be done to improve low-rated school campuses.  

Texans for Education Reform, an education advocacy group that is spending heavily in 2014, told the committee on Tuesday that lawmakers need to create a special state district for school campuses are chronically underperforming; an achievement school district.

“We have to think about morally responsible timelines for intervention for low-performing schools,” said Julie Linn, executive director for Texans for Education Reform.

Opera Piccola Bringing Two New Productions On Mother's Day Weekend

On May 10 and 11, Opera Piccola are bringing two operas to the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre stage.

“Anytime we get to perform or present two pieces of new opera in a place for the first time, it’s exciting," said Opera Piccola Artistic Director Mark Richter. 

“There are two one-act operas; two very different kinds of experiences," he said. "One, of course, is derived from the ancient tale of Orpheus and how he follows his love Eurydice into the underworld after she dies.”

You may have heard of Orpheus and Eurydice.

San Antonio Leaders Take Field Trip To Look At Austin's High-Speed Network

Former Councilwoman Leticia Ozuna, who is pushing for the San Antonio Broadband Network (SABN), will attend the field trip to Austin with other city leaders.

San Antonio city leaders are heading to Austin today to study the Greater Austin Area Telecommunications Network (GAATN).

It connects places like schools, police stations, libraries, and universities to a fiber network for large information sharing abilities.

GAATN is very similar to the Alamo City's proposed San Antonio Area Broadband Network, or SAABN.

Army Army Chief Of Staff Odierno Visits San Antonio Military Posts, Awards Purple Heart

U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno came to San Antonio Wednesday to visit wounded troops at the Brooke Army Medical Center, the Center for the Intrepid, and the Warrior and Family Support Center. 

The general was also here to pin the Purple Heart on a soldier wounded in Afghanistan.

Texas Historical Commission Names Bolner's Fiesta Products A "Texas Treasure"

On Tuesday a San Antonio icon in the food industry received recognition as an historic Texas business.

Bolner’s Fiesta Products was honored by the state as a Texas Treasure.          

The Texas Treasure Award was created by the legislature in 2005 to honor long-standing businesses that have added value and character to the culture of the state.

State Sen. Leticia Van De Putte, who presented the award to the Bolner family, said it was especially meaningful for her.

The Source: State-Run Homes For The Disabled Still Troubled

A state-run living center for the disabled in Austin spent a little over $1 million for a private firm to come in and resolve the many issues and infractions detailed in a report by state regulators. A year later the firm is gone and the center has the same amount of infractions. The Austin American-statesman ran a good piece on it last weekend.

"Golden Theater" At The Playhouse Provides A Creative Outlet For Seniors

A new production is relying on some not-so-new actors. As someone who is gray-haired myself, I can call those actors not-so-new. Although many of them are new to acting itself. The program is called Golden Theater.

Christina Casella, the education outreach director at The Playhouse, said the program is basically theater classes for senior citizens.

Lawmakers Weighing Options With Mental Illness In Texas Prison Population

According to state officials, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice counts a large number of inmates with mental illness and drug addiction because the state lacks funding for their treatment. 

On Tuesday members of the House Corrections and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee held a special joint committee hearing to discuss the huge influx of mentally ill people who are being sent to prison.
