You May Qualify For CPS Energy's Casa Verde Program

The Casa Verde program is targeting older homes like this one that could use additional weatherization.

CPS Energy is looking for new applicants to its Casa Verde energy-efficiency program, a weatherization program designed to help families in need reduce their monthly utility bills.

CPS Energy provided no-cost home improvements to 800 CPS Energy customers last year.

CPS Spokesman Albert Cantu says the program offers free energy recommendations for the customer’s individual needs and home, and even sends workers to replace or upgrade items on the list:

San Antonio Commuters Spend 38 Additional Hours On The Road Per Year

The Texas A&M Transportation Institute's annual Urban Mobility Report draws attention to poor city infrastructure

The Texas Transportation Institute released its annual mobility report detailing just how much time people spend on the road during commute times.

San Antonio ranks at number 30 with about 38 additional hours spent in extra travel time per year. Considering that San Antonio is the seventh largest city in the United States, that's not too bad.

CineFestival, Longest-Running Latino Film Festival, Begins Feb. 23

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center has announced the finalists for this year’s CineFestival, and this year’s event features more local talent than in the past.

The festival kicked off its series Tuesday with a showing of a short film reviewing Sandra Cisneros’ new book.

"We had over 100 submissions and we're probably bringing you about 42 or 43 of those," said CineFestival Curator Jimmy Mendiola.

Mendiola grew up in San Antonio but spent years making movies in California. Now, Mendiola said, is the time to be a San Antonio filmmaker.

Gen. Travis Re-Opens The Alamo Gift Shop

The Alamo is now being operated by the Texas General Land Office

After months of being closed for renovation, the gift shop at the Alamo is reopening on Friday with dramatic flare. 

"The Alamo Gift Shop is vital to the daily operations because the Alamo derives most of its funding from proceeds from the gift shop," said Mark Loeffle with the Texas General Land Office, which now has control over the landmark.

He said the new Alamo gift shop is loaded with unique Alamo souvenirs for the tourist looking for that special relic of the shrine of Texas liberty.

Castro Testifies At Committee Hearing On Immigration Reform

Though he just announced his re-election bid with the promise that he's "not going anywhere," Castro continues to be in the national spotlight.

During the first hearing on immigration of the 113th Congress, House Republicans honed in on seeking a middle ground  between “mass deportation” of undocumented immigrants and providing a path to citizenship. 

The Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Virginia, called it the question of the day.

“Are there options that we should consider between the extremes of mass deportation and a pathway to citizenship?" Goodlatte asked San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro.

City Looking To Bolster Local Manufacturing By Increasing Exports

Much of the discussion at City Hall yesterday was about economic issues like exports.

San Antonio city leaders are looking at ways to increase its import and export industry, but are focusing intently on exports.

According to reports, Canada, Mexico, Japan, the United Kingdom and China are the top five export markets for the city, with exports increasing by $5 billion from 2003 to 2010.

Many within the city now want to focus on challenges like logistics in transporting or varying regulations in exports that block San Antonio's success.

Air Force Implementing 'Early Out' Program To Reduce Enlisted Ranks

The Air Force has released a plan to shrink its numbers by 3,340 airmen this year. The "early out" program is helping the service meet congressionally-mandated numbers by the end of September.

Those who choose to accept the offers to retire early must do so in time to be separated by September 29.

The Cinematic Sounds Of Lo'Jo

Celebrating thirty years of performing, Lo'Jo, the French group from Angers, have released their thirteenth album. The title of the album says it all 'Cinema El Mundo', and the music unfolds as in a film.

It starts out with the aptly named "At The Beginning" and brings us along on a journey which incorporates music from North Africa. Vocals from the iconic English singer Robert Wyatt are added, and no Lo'Jo album would be complete without the El Mourid sisters.

Employees And Employers Mismatched In Bexar County

A student in the Just in Time program works on a training project. The first wave of graduates will be ready for work in March.

A sizable gap is occurring in Bexar County between employers who need a certain skill set for a job and people qualified for the open positions.

In January, Workforce Solutions Alamo reported that there were nearly 1,700 help wanted ads for registered nurses, nearly 600 for retail sales managers and nearly 400 for computer support specialists, but Eva Esquivel, works for Workforce, said people looking for jobs don't have the skills needed for these fields.
