Despite her English name, Carla Morrison is Mexican. Her father, Hilario Viera, ran away from Durango, Mexico as a young man and ended up  in San Diego. Hilario was adopted by William Morrison, who in turn gave him his new surname.

Years later, Hilario returned to Mexico and married Porfiria Flores in Tecate where Carla was born. She received a high school education in Phoenix and pursued music studies at the University of Arizona. It wasn't until she reached high school that anyone realized she could sing, as she was extremely shy as a girl.

Each season, Camerata San Antonio features one player in concert for the "Camerata Recital." This year will be the first for co-founder  Emily Watkins-Freudigman, who will play music by Benjamin Britten, Darius Milhaud, Robert Schumann, and Sergei Prokofiev.

In 1982 I was pushed into a chair in front of a microphone to back announce Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 3."  Back then, KPAC was brand new, and had four turntables, reel to reel machines, and a small staff. With no university or college to support us, bringing classical music to San Antonio was a gamble from the get - go. Here are some of my favorite musical moments of the last three decades.

Drummers and dancers dressed in brightly-colored costumes from the percussion and dance company, Samba Vida, helped celebrate an accomplishment never before achieved by San Antonio’s Animal Care Services.

The award for saving 1,384 more dogs and cats than the same three months in 2011 – August, September, and October – garnered the shelter a $100,000 prize.

But the real prize, said ACS Director Kathy Davis, is the animals that are happy and healthy today because of the community’s efforts to choose adoption.
