 Last year (2012) was a Mexico-wide -- and even international -- year of reflection upon the life and career of the Mexican composer and conductor Eduardo Mata. He would have been 70 years old, if not for his tragic death, much too young, in 1995.

The City of San Antonio's Department of Human Services has recommended to council members that a commission dealing with children and families be dissolved.

Formed in the 1980's, the Commission for Children and Families was created to address the needs of parents and their children.

At that time, the city wanted to identify opportunities for learning and growing, making neighborhoods safe, and improving lifestyles and financial fitness.

The White house has formally responded to a petition requesting that Texas secede from the Union. Although the petition gained signatures quickly, there will be no division initiatives supported the White House anytime soon.

State Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston, is pushing for a school voucher system called Taxpayer Savings Grants that would allow students to pick a private school if they are unhappy with their public school.

Now that he’s the chair of the Senate Education Committee, Patrick could use the platform to champion the program, and he has two words for a school voucher system: "Why not?"

Tuesday, January 22, Joyce Yang will return to San Antonio for a piano recital. She has played with the San Antonio Symphony, collaborated with violinist Augustin Haedlich, but this time will be solo at Laurel Heights United Methodist Church. Her program has music by Beethoven, Chopin, Bartok, and Rachmaninoff.

"The Second Sonata is a great example of that passion on the verge of hysteria. It is unusual Rachmaninoff in many ways - it was edited several times, and can seem schizophrenic!"

Today the University Health System officially begins services at its new Robert B. Green Campus in downtown San Antonio.

The grand opening of the Clinical Pavilion on the Robert B Green Campus over the weekend means that starting today, patients can get primary care, pediatric care, women’s care, outpatient surgery, imaging and other services in a brand new, high-tech facility.
