As we struggle to meet water resource challenges, what is the proper role that government should play regarding land development and other traditionally unregulated issues, in order to protect stream flows and the private property rights of landowners? All are potentially impacted by water marketing and increased withdrawals from aquifers. Stay tuned for the Texas Water Symposium, presented by the Hill Country Alliance, Schreiner University, and Texas Tech University, and recorded on the campus of Schreiner University in Kerrville.
"Annelies" is a music event unlike perhaps any you've been to before. It's the story of Anne Frank, who hid from the Nazis with her family for three years in an Amsterdam attic. They were eventually found and all died in Bergen-Belsen concentration Camp.
Left behind though, was her diary, which revealed her intelligence and humanity in a particularly inhumane situation. It served as a catalyst for movies, and as San Antonio Mastersinger Chancey Blackburn explains, a piece of music.
While the general election is still a year away, tension between gubernatorial candidates Wendy Davis and Greg Abbott is already ratcheting up.
That battle is over money that the courts say Davis is owed for attorney fees during the 2011 redistricting battle over her state Senate seat -- a federal court in San Antonio ruled in Davis' favor just over a month ago.
Davis’ attorney Gerry Hebert said the federal court ordered Abbott to pay $600,000 as part of their decision for Davis.
In 1994 two girls described a harrowing scene of a sadistic rape and orgy. Their story implicated their aunt, Elizabeth Ramirez, and three of her friends in sexually abusing the girls who were aged 7 and 9 at the time. As a result of the girls testimony, along with that of child-abuse expert, Nancy Kellogg, 4 women, all in their late teens and early twenties, were sentenced to long prison sentences. Kellogg, who is now a faculty member at the University of Texas Health Science Center, also noted signs that satanist ritual might have been a motivation of the four women. But now, nearly twenty years later, the story is looking less and less true.
Unlike many of the visits by Democrats to Texas over the last few months, Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to Austin was not met with criticism from Texas Republicans, instead he was thanked by Attorney General Greg Abbott.
In a statement, Abbott wrote:
"I would like to thank Vice President Joe Biden for remembering Texas women during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month."
With all the Dia De Los Muertos celebrations in town, there’s one other you may have missed. Diwali extols the victory of good over evil. It also celebrates Indian culture -- the kind that comes from India. Kausi Subramanium explains:
"Diwali San Antonio Festival of Lights will be celebrating its fifth anniversary this Saturday, November 2 from 5 p.m.-10 p.m. at Hemisfair Park," Subramanium said. "We will have live music and dancing -- dancealongs where our guests can participate in Bhangra, Garbha, as well as Bollywood Zumba."
The arts are growing in San Antonio, and have grown each year since the recession ended.
This year's Economic Impact of the Creative Industry on San Antonio report shows a slight but significant increase over last year, just one to two percent, but Dr. Steve Nivin at St. Mary’s University said the increase has been steady over the past few years.
