Video: New Harp Release Focuses On American Composers

Harpist Yolanda Kondonassis grew up in Oklahoma. She made her debut (at age 18!) with the New York Philharmonic and Zubin Mehta, and has since toured worldwide, with every major orchestra. On top of her busy schedule, Yolanda heads the harp department at the Cleveland Institute of Music and Oberlin College Conservatory, and has even written a children's book about conservation (see the related story below).

Texas Auto Theft Prevention Experts Meeting In San Antonio

The state’s top auto theft detectives are meeting in San Antonio this week and have a list of tips for owners of certain vehicles.

Lt. Paul Heitzmann of the San Antonio Police Department said auto theft is a sophisticated operation these days. Thieves also are looking inside your vehicle for paperwork that can give them a chance to steal your identify.

"Auto crime is now an organized criminal activity. It is no longer just a crime of opportunity," he said.

Supreme Court Sends Affirmative Action In Universities Back To Fifth Circuit

Affirmative action in college admissions is heading back to a lower court after the U.S. Supreme Court opted not to issue a sweeping constitutionality decision and instead re-evaluated the fundamentals in Fisher v. University of Texas.

The case centered on Abigail Fisher, a UT hopeful who was denied admission in 2008 -- Fisher was Caucasian. She claimed that students of other race were given priority admittance.

Lackland Court-Martial Another Case Of Alleged Sexual Assault

Senior Airman Christopher Oliver, a military training instructor, is facing a general court-martial today at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.

Oliver is charged with aggravated sexual assault and abusive sexual contact against a boot camp trainee. He also is charged with having unprofessional relationships with two other basic trainees and continuing those relationships when the trainees advanced into technical training.

Training instructors are prohibited by the Uniform Code of Military Justice from having personal relationships with trainees at any level.

House Passes Abortion Bill At 3 A.M. Second Reading

With a surge of abortion debate, the special session has turned the state capitol into a battleground for women's rights.

House Democrats stalled a vote on a set of abortion bills as long as they could this past weekend, forcing House Republicans to sit through dozens of amendments that ranged from changing the language of the bill to tactics that would have killed the legislation.

At just after 3 a.m. on Saturday, the House took a second reading vote on all abortion measures, which passed.

UTSA Receives Global Ranking In Top 100 Under 50

University of Texas at San Antonio

The University of Texas-San Antonio has been named as one of the top 100 universities among young universities of the world, and this is the second year in a row the school has received the honor from the Times Higher Education.

Times Higher Education is considered one of the most respected higher education ranking authorities in the world. UTSA is one of only eight universities in the U.S. to receive the ranking.

UTSA Communications Director Joe Izbrand said the coveted ranking means UTSA has reached a global reputation as a rising star  in research.

Public hears proposals for Hwy. 281 North expansion

More than 200 commuters and residents turned out to hear about the Environmental Impact Statement of construction projects to ease traffic congestion on Hwy. 281 north of Loop 1604.

More than 30 addressed the RMA at the public meeting, many lining up against a proposed tollway.

The report studied the environmental, social and economic impacts of the proposed construction of more highway lane between Loop 1604 and Borgfeld Road.

Spurs Lose NBA Finals, But Fan Faith Remains Strong

For the first time, the San Antonio Spurs left the NBA finals empty handed, as the  Miami Heat claimed victory last night. But even though the Spurs lost, fans still gathered downtown post-game to show support for the team.

During the game, cheers echoed throughout downtown. But the as the final seconds of game seven ticked away, hope gave way to heartbreak as the Heat gained a slight advantage over the Spurs, clinching the title 95-88.
