This week, six high school students are working with staff to learn basic radio interviewing and production skills, with the goal of having a finished project at the end of the week that combines words and music. On Wednesday, KABB Chief Meterologist Alex Garcia joined us to share his own professional journey through radio, television, and education, and we spent time interviewing the musicians who were in house yesterday.
Reagan High School student Ramee Saleh writes about today's experiences:
Protesters outside the Stand With Texas Women rally in San Antonio last week. Even with the bill's passage, an initial victory for the pro-life movement, the courts could be the ultimate decider in the highly-controversial restrictions.
Update: Gov. Perry is set to sign HB 2 in a ceremony this morning, July 18, at 9:30 at the state capitol.
Original Post: Thus far, no lawsuit against the State of Texas has been filed -- that would only come after Gov. Rick Perry signs the bill into law -- but even after the governor signs it, Terri Burke, the executive director the ACLU of Texas, said a lawsuit wouldn't be filed until 90 days later.
Less than 72 hours after the passage of House Bill 2, the bill that will hold clinics performing abortions to a standard equal to a ambulatory surgical center, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst released a campaign video that features his role in the bill's passage with clear political and religious undertones.
On June 19, before the filibuster by Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, and before the second special session was even being discussed, Dewhurst sent a tweet that featured an ad about how the abortion bill would close all but five clinics in Texas.
I recently came across a steal. A friend on a social network posted that a recording was $6. That may seem normal for an mp3 release, or mildly cheap if you purchase an iTunes release for $9.99. But this particular recording was live from Bayreuth - the complete Ring der Nibelungen by Richard Wagner. Yes, all four operas.
The whole world has been celebrating the 200th anniversary of Wagner's birth this year (his birthday is May 22). Summer festivals have been playing his music, and several cycles of the Ring are programmed for companies this fall and winter.
Bexar County has been selected by the state legislature to test a pilot program for email voting. For the first time next year, ballots will be sent and returned by email from 200-300 military members.
Voters eligible for the program will be able to cast ballots by email for the first time in the 2014 primary elections.
Army Entertainment is launching the ninth season of "Operation Rising Star," a singing competition based on the "American Idol" format. The program is open to active duty military, National Guard and Reserve members and their adult family members.
The Army Installation Management Command is encouraging garrisons to collaborate with their food and beverage facilities, recreation programs, marketing teams and Better Opportunities for Single Servicemembers programs to get a program going for local contestants.
The newest chamber music series, Q, continues this week with an all woodwind quintet program. Led by oboist Jennifer Berg, this weekend will mark the return of the formerly Boston based quintet, Q. "We struggled with the name, it was Quintuplets, Woodwind Fire (a pun on Earth, Wind and Fire), but we decided Q was best," says Berg.
