Abbott Campaign Spends $10 Million For Fall Homestretch Advertising Push

The Abbott campaign is gearing up for what Cal Jillson is calling "the most heated advertising campaign we’ve seen in our lifetime."

Republican gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott’s campaign confirmed they have spent $10 million to secure prime advertising spots in the last month of the general election.

Political expert Cal Jillson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University, said an early buy-in can mean locking in lower rates and the campaign’s ability to reserve the best ad placement. 

Jillson said the timing of this news, which comes the same time of the Texas Democratic Party convention, is also a "shot across the bow."

While Poverty & Gangs Push, Opportunity Draws Honduran Children To The U.S.

President Obama is requesting that Congress authorize $2 billion and special powers to deal with the surge of unaccompanied minor immigrants.

In record numbers the children are coming from Central America, crossing the Rio Grande and overwhelming the U.S. system after being apprehended at the Texas border. Most are coming from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, but Honduras is the leading source country.

Villarreal Makes It Official: He Is Leaving Legislature To Run For San Antonio Mayor

State Rep. Mike Villarreal isn't waiting for Mayor Julián Castro to be approved by the full U.S. Senate before organizing his mayoral campaign.

Soon after word began to circulate about San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro’s appointment to President Barack Obama's cabinet, state Rep. Mike Villarreal, D-San Antonio, began announcing his intentions to run for mayor.

Villarreal has now made it official with a fundraising email to his past supporters, telling them he is stepping down from the Legislature to organize a campaign to be the next mayor of San Antonio.

The Source: Are We Overusing SWAT Teams?

A grandfather who died on the floor of his own home, the result of a misfire, a mother who was shot while holding her infant son, a new study from the American Civil Liberties Union highlights tragedies that have happened when Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams are used for incidents once thought of as outside of their scope.

The study identifies a high percentage of times when the use of SWAT teams was superflous -- 62% were for drug searches in a 2011 and 2012.

Balcones Heights Jazz Festival Starts July 11 At Wonderland Mall

The Balcones Heights Jazz Festival will soon kick off.

“The Balcones Heights Jazz Festival runs this year for four consecutive Friday nights: July 11, 18, 25, and August 1," said Balcones Heights Director of Community Initiatives Lorenzo Nastasi.

“The venue is really remarkable -- at Wonderland of the Americas around that wonderful reflecting pool, the amphitheater setting, the grassy hillside.”  

And then there’s the music. It's all Jazz, but jazz features a lot of iterations.

H-E-B Begin Downtown Expansion With South Flores Hike & Bike Trails, Park

The neighborhood improvements along South Flores that will lead into the construction of a downtown grocery store are now underway.

The improvements begin with Commanders House Park along South Flores. It's a green space not many San Antonians have gotten to enjoy. But that's changing because of H-E-B's project to add hike and bike trails, renovate its downtown headquarters, and add a 10,000 square foot grocery store.

Friday, workers began cutting down the fence separating the Commanders House from South Flores, where hike and bike trails will be placed.

Austin Man Pleads Guilty To Federal Terrorism Charges

In Austin on Friday, 23-year-old Michael Wolfe admitted in federal court that he had been planning since last August to travel to the Middle East to provide his services to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham and to engage in violent jihad in Syria.

He pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to provide material support and resources to a foreign terrorist organization.
