July 29, 1910 in Slocum, Texas started off like any other Friday in this rural East Texas community – but before the day was over one of the worst racial atrocities in Texas history would happen.

The City of San Antonio is keeping a promise it made to the NCAA. It is renovating the Alamodome, in order to get it ready for the 2018 Division I Final Four men’s basketball tournament.

This will be the first major renovation of the Alamodome since it was built in 1993. The $41 million approved by the council will be used to double the width of the circular hallway around the dome, and the city will also design new video boards, build a new press area, and renovate the locker room and bathrooms.

The first honoree list in 2001 included the incomparable Willie Nelson, folk music superstars Flaco and Santiago Jiminez, actor Tommy Lee Jones, restoration architect Wayne Bell, and the man who wrote the screenplay for To Kill A Mockingbird, Horton Foote, amongst a host of other Texas legends.

Movies have the power to transport, to teach, to envelope, to do so many things to us and for us. But why? Why do people cry at movies they don't think are that good? Why do bigger screens mean bigger emotional responses, as data suggests? Why do people react to pain on screen with pained looks in theaters?
