A highly acclaimed author is coming to San Antonio on Wednesday to speak at Trinity University and I  spoke to her last Friday. When you’re talking to Rebecca Solnit, it doesn’t take long to realize she’s probably the smartest person around in most rooms she enters.

“What happens in disasters is highly variable and it depends a lot on our social structures and our belief systems and solidarity.”

She’s been to the site of many disasters, studies what goes on there and has written about them, as well as a wide expanse of other topics.

It’s a concert that’s small in size but huge in scope. That distinctive sound of classical Hindustani (north Indian) music immediately takes you to a dreamy place.

“The gentleman named Indradeep Ghosh, a master violinist from north India, will be joining us for a concert Nov. 14.”

That’s Rick Henderson, who is producing the concert and playing the sarod, a lute-like instrument associated with classical Indian music. They will be playing what are called “duets.”

As San Antonio Democratic state senator, Leticia Van De Putte, considers her next career move, other firebrand Democratic lawmakers have already begun announcing their interest in filling her spot in the state senate. 

Sen. Van De Putte says she isn’t sure whether she’ll run in the San Antonio mayoral election in 2015, but it might be interesting to note how this potential move might affect senate Democrats during the upcoming legislative session.

The new president for the University of Texas’ Rio Grande Valley campus approved “Vaquero” as the university’s mascot despite a backlash from students, alumni and South Texas lawmakers. 

UT’s Board of Regents set up its Rio Grande Valley campus as a way to grow their South Texas institutions. They merged UT-Brownsville and UT-Pan American, and added a new medical school for the region. Part of that transition involved coming up with a new mascot and school colors.

The 2014 U.S. Sled Hockey team won gold for the second consecutive paralympics in Sochi, Russia. It hadn't been done before in the relatively unknown sport, but sled hockey may not be under-the-radar for much longer.
