An Innocent Man In Solitary Confinement

An example of a solitary confinement cell
Flikr User: Derek Purdy

After nearly 19 years and 2 failed attempts by the state of Texas to bring him to execution, Anthony Graves was exonerated and released from prison. He now works as an advocate for reform in Texas. He joined us on our program "The Source" to give us an insight into what being in solitary confinement is like.

"It literally drives men insane. I witnessed it myself. I seen guys hanging themselves, cuttin their throats, overdosin on their medications, droppin their appeals, just trying to find a way to check out..."

Governor Perry used much of the same rhetoric he used while touring with his group, Americans for Economic Freedom, when he recently spoke at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference.  The Texas Republican still sounded like he plans a presidential run in 2016.

Saturday, Sons of the American Revolution thanked veterans by giving ten Purple Heart recipients, who are transitioning back to civilian life after their injuries, tool boxes worth $1,000 each.

The effort is ongoing, with a promise to get tool boxes into the hands of every wounded war hero in the nation:

Brandi Hootsell opens the tool box her husband received last year from the group.

“It came packed,” she said. “There’s a saw in here, saw blades, gloves. They’re nice tools, too.”

Is there water on Mars?  Two new studies by the Southwest Research Institute are shedding light on what would be  a game changing discovery, flowing water. One of the studies analysis the mystery behind dark, finger-like impressions on the hills of the planet that grow longer after the planet's warm season. Authors postulate the possibility of warm air melting water below the surface that rolls downhill.

Piñata Protest, Making A Bilingual Name For Itself

Pinata Protest
Josh Huskin

A San Antonio band is fast gathering a national following. First, you should know Piñata Protest music is a really unusual hybrid.

“We call it Tex-Mex punk rock."

Accordion player and lead singer Alvaro Del Norte puts it this way.

"Y’know, it’s a blend of all sorts of music, from all sorts of cultures, from all regions that have come to Texas. Tex-Mex plus a punk rock element.”

And this week they’re heading to south by southwest.

“Yeah, we’re doing south by southwest again this year" he said. "I think it’s our fifth time in a row.”

In US prisons 80,000 people are held in solitary confinement every year, spending more than 22 hours completely alone. It's expensive, its effectiveness is questionable and a growing body of work shows it exacerbates mental health issues. In addition to exacerbating mental health issues already present there is substantial research showing it causes mental health problems.

At The McNay, Set Design Takes The Spotlight

Design of Tevye’s House, 2009-2010 Fiddler on the Roof National Tour
Steve and Sam Gilliam

I caught up with Steve and Sam Gilliam, a pair of artists whose work works best when you don’t notice it. Their work is being featured at the McNay Museum of Art, but it won’t hang on walls. It won’t be erected prominently in front of a major building and it won’t be sold at a Sotheby’s Auction.

The Gilliams design sets for plays -- their most memorable was "Fiddler on the Roof."

Four mayors are focusing their time in office on education. Because of that, they're touring each other's cities to learn new ideas.

Former NBA star, and now the mayor of Sacramento, Kevin Johnson, walked the halls of Pre-K 4 SA's South Side model education center Friday. He told a panel consisting of San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro, Pre-K 4 SA CEO Kathy Bruck, and City Manager Sheryl Sculley, that he's jealous of San Antonio.

Ryan Loyd TPR News

District 1 City Councilman Diego Bernal said soon the city will look at the most aggressive policy it has ever seen on empty buildings. On Friday he outlined that promise at his second State of the Center City address.

As TPR has reported, San Antonio has a downtown vacancy rate of 29 percent. That figure is 19 percent citywide, which is why Bernal said he will be introducing a bold measure to take care of empty buildings.

Republican lieutenant governor candidate Dan Patrick’s campaign has set a date for a debate with San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro -- the campaign also leaked information about a possible statewide runoff debate in the planning stages with incumbent Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst.
