Poet Laureate Carmen Tafolla To Speak In Bordeaux, France

San Antonio’s poet laureate is on her way this week to Bordeaux, France, to perform at the International Conference on Interlanguage.

Dr. Carmen Tafolla’s poetry has been heard in countries all over the world, but she said she was invited to the linguistic conference based on her mastery of code-switching. She says this is the natural progression of language, and it happens all the time:

Sen. Rand Paul Takes Turn On Immigration Reform - Work Visas

Rand Paul is known for his conservative Tea Party stance, but his latest comments about work visas are turning some heads.

As the Republican Party continues to grapple with finding a solution to its Latino voter problem, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky has dramatically softened his stance on immigration reform.

Paul told the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday that there could be a place in America for undocumented workers.

At first there was some confusion about what Paul said to the Hispanic Chamber. It was reported that the he had jumped the Tea Party ship and was endorsing comprehensive immigration reform including a pathway to citizenship.

The San Antonio Chamber Music Society is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year and what a great reminder of what chamber music is all about than when husband and wife duo David Finckel (cello) and Wu Han (piano) performed at Temple Bethel last Sunday.

They were recently named "Musicians of the Year" by Musical America in 2012. Some concerts you know are going to be great just by walking in the hall, and this was one of them.

WOAI-TV Damaged In Early-Morning Fire, But Back On Air

News 4 WOAI had to evacuate mid-broadcast after fire alarms sounded at about 5 a.m. at their studio on N. St. Mary’s and Navarro. "WOAI Today" Morning Anchor Leslie Bohl said at first the staff thought the sirens were a false alarm.

"The alarm kept going off for about five to six minutes, we stayed with the Vatican coverage and once the alarm went off we resumed broadcasting," Bohl said.

Once they resumed local news, they were told to evacuate.

Bajofondo: South American Landscapes

Bajofondo started as a loose collective of musicians from Argentina and Uruguay, but over time formed a solid core of players that have since become a cohesive band. Their latest release, "Presente," consists of twenty one tracks and has a massive sound.

For this CD the group augmented their sound with an enormous orchestral section, giving each of their songs a full and well-rounded sound.

Changes To The Remaining 'Carnegie Hall Live' Broadcasts

With the San Francisco Symphony on strike, the Berlin Philharmonic will be substituted for this week's performance of "Carnegie Hall Live."  

The remaining three "Carnegie Hall Live" recorded broadcasts will be aired on Saturday nights at 7 p.m. on KPAC and KTXI.

Mayor Castro Calls For A Fit And Green Fiesta 2013

Mayor Castro is encouraging Fiesta-goers to be physically active and environmentally responsible for this years celebration.

The countdown is on for Fiesta 2013 and Mayor Julián Castro is asking Fiesta-goers be fit and green during the 11-day celebration. 

April 18 through April 28 San Antonians will be occupied with traditional parades and parties. Castro said Fiesta is the time for fun and frivolity, but it can be done while keeping Fiesta green.

"We’re here today to invite folks out, of course, to Fiesta, but also to challenge San Antonians to participate in this fit and green Fiesta in the year 2013," Castro said.
