Born and raised in San Antonio, Joey joined the Texas Public Radio newsroom in October of 2011. Joey graduated from Roosevelt High School and obtained an A.A.S in Radio-Television-Broadcasting from San Antonio College in 2010.

Joey started his broadcasting career  in 2007 at KSYM-90.1 FM as a DJ and later became Program Director of the station. After graduation, he interned at  KTSA-550 AM and was hired as a reporter covering elections, breaking news, and the 2011 legislative session.

For TPR, Joey covers a variety of general assignments including: breaking news, local school districts, higher education, police, fire, capital improvement, non-profits, health care, community issues and local politics. Joey has also had several stories aired on NPR national newscasts.

When not working, Joey enjoys biking, hiking, cooking, and socializing.

Theatre Group Performs "It's a Wonderful Life" Live And On The Radio

Radio has evolved over the last 90 years since it's golden age of bringing live drama, music, and news . With Television, radio dramas have all-but died out, but beginning this weekend, a local theater troop is bringing back the radio drama for a live performance of "It’s a Wonderful Life."

In the 1940’s, families listened radio dramas and gathered around at home before television; that’s all there was except for movies. Live audiences would fill theatres like a sitcom, sound effects would be improvised, and the actors had only their voices to create their characters.

Hwy 281 & Loop 1604 Ramps Should Relieve Rush Hour Congestion

The 1604 East & West is unveiled by construction workers. Since construction began 18 months ago nearly one million man hours have gone into the project.

Hwy 281 North and Loop 1604 are finally connecting this afternoon evening and will finally be open after months of construction.

Anyone who travels the 281/1604 corridor knows the extended commute they face during rush hour, but with the completion of one of the connectors, drivers on 281 North can access 1604 East & West without having to exit the freeway.

Cortez Defeats Incumbent Garza In Texas House District 117

Republican incumbent John Garza was elected during the Republican sweep in the 2010 mid-term elections, but this year former San Antonio City Councilman Philip Cortez ended election night with 53 percent of voter support to win the seat.

Cortez said he pledges to fight any additional cuts to the Texas education system when he takes office in January.

“I will fight them tooth and nail because those dollars are for our children and for the resources that teachers need to ensure we are properly educating the future leaders of this great state of Texas,” Cortez said.

Pamerleau Beats Ortiz: First Elected Female Bexar County Sheriff

Bexar County Sheriff-Elect Susan Pamerleau shakes hands with a supporter during Election Night 2012 at the Republican Party Headquarters in Bexar County.

Bexar County will have a new sheriff after the Republican challenger unseated Democratic incumbent Amadeo Ortiz.  

Bexar County Sheriff-Elect Susan Pamerleau had a smile from ear to ear with an early vote lead of nine percent when the polls closed on election night. In the end, Pamerleau had won by a slim margin with 51 percent.

At the Republican watch party, Pamerleau dropped hints that she is intent on changing some of the inner workings of the sheriff’s department.

SAPD Sgt. Honored for Saving Teens from Burning Car

San Antonio Police Sgt. Jesse Garcia was on his way home Saturday morning when he saw a burning vehicle.

“I just ran up to the fire and never in my mind did I think that there would be people inside the vehicle,” said Garcia. "I heard her [the driver] saying, 'I don't want to die this way. I don't want to die, don't leave me.'" 

The car, which had two girls inside ages 17 and 19, slammed into a utility pole near 1604 and Sulfur Springs. The driver was trapped under her seatbelt.

Pride Center San Antonio Providing New Home to LGBTQ Community

San Antonio is one the few major cities in the country without a dedicated LGBTQ community center. While there were several attempts in the past, a collective of community members is laying the ground work to establish a new one.

The Pride Center San Antonio doesn’t have a dedicated space yet, but the people behind its creation want it to be a connector for the gay community.

CPS Energy Sends Crews to Help Restore Power in Virginia

CPS Energy workers watch the caravan of utility trucks leave for Richmond, Va.

Millions of people on the East Coast remain without power today as Superstorm Sandy barrels into the United States. To help restore electricity, CPS Energy is sending some of its own emergency response crews.

For the next three days, 6 of CPS Energy’s utility trucks will be traveling to help Dominion Virginia Power, who sent CPS a request for assistance on Sunday Morning.

Texas Secretary of State Addresses Election Observer Concerns

As the first five days of early voting came to a close, Texas Secretary of State Hope Andrade visited election sites across the state to praise the high turnout during early voting.  Andrade stopped in Bexar County on Friday as election monitors from Europe are being threatened by the state's attorney general.

The two election observers visiting the state are from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.

New Portion of Mission Reach Open - More Trees on the Way

A cyclist rides on the new portion of the Mission Reach near Theo Ave. The next phase of the Reach is scheduled to open in April.

It’s still nearly a year before the Mission Reach is completed, but a new stretch is now open to the public. The San Antonio River Authority and Bexar County have added an additional 1.5 mile loop near Theo Avenue and a hike and bike bridge over Concepciόn Creek.

SARA General Manager Suzanne Scott said the $3.5 million restoration of this section of the river will include the planting of new trees.
