Thousands of people crowded the parking lot of Cowboys Dancehall this morning for the 35th annual Cowboy Breakfast in what has become a San Antonio Rodeo tradition. Although people show up for the free food, one local college benefits from the remaining sponsorship money

Roughly 35,000 people turned out for this year’s breakfast, and the unseasonably warm 60 degree weather and overcast skies only helped attendance.

Taking in the music, Brenda Duarte was waiting in line for food and said this is her third year attending with family.

The Northside ISD School Board has voted to implement the last phase of a ten year project installing cameras in all of its schools. The district's elementary schools will now be placed under the monitor of digital cameras.

Northside's middle and high schools already have security cameras installed; those were approved in 2004 and 2007 through bond packages. The 2010 bond package called for $20 million to add them to elementary schools.

Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union presented $150,000 to the Alamo Colleges Foundation for an endowed scholarship to be named after its former president and CEO Randy M. Smith, who now serves as an advisor to the credit union’s board.

The Alamo Colleges Foundation provides scholarships and additional funding for district programs.

A bill filed by State Rep. Senfronia Thompson (D) of Houston would allow liquor stores to join its supermarket brethren in allowing alcohol sales after 12 p.m. Liquor stores across Texas must lock their doors on Sundays, and grocery stores cannot sell alcohol before noon.

During the cold months of January and February, five downtown bars and businesses are trying to keep the homeless of San Antonio warm with a collective donation drive through their shop fronts.

Overnight temperatures in San Antonio have dipped into the 30s in recent days. That concerns Lesa Ammann, the owner of Club Sirius on Losoya Street, who sees the homeless of San Antonio with nowhere to go.

Mayor Julián Castro has appointed an LGBT Liaison as a way to reach out to San Antonio’s gay, lesbian and transgendered community on social issues when city council and government is concerned.

Many major cities in the U.S. like New York, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia have a liaison to the gay and lesbian community installed in either their local government or police departments.

The San Antonio Police Department already has a LGBT liaison, and now there is one in City Hall.

As the New Year moves forward and the holiday season becomes a memory, some charities in San Antonio are seeing a slump in donations. With constant demand for its services, one that feels the effects the most is the San Antonio Food Bank.
