Two community funding organizations have come together to support the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. The gifts to the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System will help provide care for seriously ill children.
The two gifts are a combined $4 million for the hospital. One, for $3 million from the Valero Energy Foundation, and the other a $1 million gift from the Margie and Bill Klesse Family Foundation.
Children’s Hospital of San Antonio Foundation President John Bel said the Klesse Family Foundation gift will contribute to a level three neo-natal intensive care unit for tiny newborns, in no small part because of the Klesse’s own recent experience.
“One of their granddaughters spent the first two weeks of life in a neo-natal intensive care unit, and their having been grandparents and knowing what it meant to her healthy development, they said, ‘We want to make sure that this level of care is available right here for San Antonio and South Texas children,' ” Bel said.
The gift from Valero will be recognized in the outpatient hematology/oncology center for children with cancer and blood disorders.
Bel said the gifts combine to help the reconstruction of the children’s hospital while it continues to provide ongoing care and treatment to children.
