An event is fast approaching that has many art lovers excited. It's called "On and Off Fredericksburg Road Studio Tour." I spoke to Kellen McIntyre, who is the Executive Director of Bihl Haus Arts.
“It happens one time a year, the third weekend in February. Sixty-five artists at forty locations open their studios."
Unlike most of the year, people are allowed to come into each artists' studio. And when they pull back the curtain, you’re never quite sure what you’ll find.
“You see the different processes that they work in. They do demos in their studio. The ceramicists often open a kiln" said McIntyre. "We have printmakers who do printing and weavers who are weaving. So it’s different from experiencing artwork that’s in a gallery.”
And meeting the artists is a fascinating part of the tour.
“They’re very comfortable in their spaces. So they’re going to be more open. You can ask them virtually anything. And they rule. They rock. They’re just amazing!”
While some areas of the studio tour are densely packed with studios, some aren’t. So there are many ways to experience the tour.
“You can walk, drive, ride or bike."
That kind of activity can work up a hunger. Not a problem, says McIntyre.
"We’ve got some great little restaurants on 'Fred.' There’s a number of taquerias that will open for breakfast and lunch. Many of the studios have a libation, and maybe a little cheese and crackers.”
