Are You Getting Enough Sax This Holiday Season?

It’s another of those nowhere-but-San-Antonio holiday traditions, and they’ve been doing it for a long time.

“We’re celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Holiday Saxophones at the Guadalupe Theater.”

If the title Holiday Saxophones doesn’t explain it, the Guadalupe Cultural Art Center’s Belinda Menchaca will.

“We have 14 of the best jazz musicians in San Antonio playing holiday favorites, as well as just some awesome jazz tunes.”

Who’s performing? Here’s a partial list.

“George Prado, Frank Rodarte, Jan Halsema, Al Gomez on trumpet, Aaron Prado on piano, and Joe Posada, who is a multi-Grammy-nominated musician.”

Holiday music is the focus, but then this happens.

“And then there’s a point in the evening where the musicians just have a jam session, and I think that’s the highlight of the evening.”

If it’s been going on for 30 years, it’s as much a tradition to some folks, as going down and looking at the lights in the trees on the San Antonio River.

“Absolutely. People look forward to this event every year and people know that they’re going to see some of the best performers on stage.”

It’s Sunday night, 7 p.m., at the Guadalupe.

“It just makes for a very, very festive atmosphere.”
