Area First Responders Organize Furniture Drive For Displaced Wedgwood Residents

A group of first responders in San Antonio has organized an unusual event to help displaced residents of the Wedgwood Senior Living Apartments.

Over a dozen firefighters and paramedics are collecting furniture, small appliances, and other household items Saturday at five fire stations around town.

John Henderson, a firefighter with the Terrell Hills Fire Department, who also owns a moving company, is donating the use of his trucks to help an overwhelmed San Antonio Furniture Bank deliver the items to residents who need them.

"Their problem was one, just bottlenecking everything at their warehouse and getting things picked up and delivered out. They're used to one or two fires a week and slow volume, but we've got 200-300 residents who need help all at once," Henderson said.

Since the December fire, many Wedgwood residents have found new homes but they were not able to retrieve their furniture from their burned-out apartments.

Henderson said the San Antonio Furniture Bank has helped 30 residents but there are still more than 100 apartments with residents who may need household items.

The furniture drive locations Saturday include Leon Valley, Terrell Hills and three San Antonio fire stations. More information is available at http://sanantoniofurniturebank.org/
