Army North Commander Taking Post At Georgia Military College

Army North

U.S. Army North at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston will be looking for a new commander now that Lt. General William Caldwell IV is leaving to become president of the Georgia Military College.

Caldwell has submitted his retirement paperwork to the Department of Defense and has announced to friends that he will leave Texas to become the next president of the military college in Milledgeville, Georgia.

Caldwell currently serves as the commander of the 5th Army in San Antonio, and is responsible for preparing an array of specialized forces to rapidly respond to domestic catastrophes and homeland protection.

Caldwell has served the position since December of 2011; his father held the same position in the late 1970s.

Caldwell’s 37-year career in the military included commanding the NATO Training Mission and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. During his tenure as commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division, Caldwell led 3,600 paratroopers in the evacuation of 6,000 residents from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

His division also treated 1,300 individuals and cleared 185 city blocks of debris in the aftermath of the storm.

Pending approval of his retirement, Caldwell plans to take the reins at Georgia Military College this summer.
