B-Cycle Bike Share Expands East, North Up To The Witte

As B-cycle nears its two year anniversary in San Antonio, five new stations north and east of downtown have been installed.

The newB-cycle stations are at the Zoo, the Witte Museum, Tri-point YMCA, the South St. Mary’s Acemart and Sunset Station. The station at the Witte is now the farthest northern location.

There are now 35 stations and B-Cycle executive director Cindy Snell said they hope to have 50 stations by the end of this year.

"All of our historic territories are covered with B-cycle and now we are really looking at neighborhoods, and businesses, and transit stops," Snell said.

B-Cycle expansion is expected to stretch at least 4 miles outside downtown. Most of the new stations have been north and south,  but Snell said there are plans to move east and west.

"Some areas are kind of under development now, and as things become complete in those territories then we already have sites spec’d for the different parts of town," she added.

Each kiosk costs around $50,000 to set up and the current B-Cycle stations were built using grants provided by the Department of Energy, Centers for Disease Control and other federal entities.

Last month the city secured grand funding from the Department of Transportation to install five additional stations along the Mission Reach in the coming months.

Since its inception there have been 15,000 day passes purchased for the system and 1,600 annual members.
