Big Weekend Fun Headed Your Way

There's a whole lot going on over the weekend. As always, we try to give you a leg up on it by highlighting three events for your consideration. First stop: the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. Maria Kanyova talks about her starring role in Madama Butterfly.

"If you haven’t seen an opera this would be the one to see and begin your love of the art form. This one is really what’s considered a tour de force. Madama Butterfly from start to finish—she almost never leaves the stage.”

It's a love story about an American soldier who falls for a Japanese geisha. But things go tragically awry. She says the opera has two big payoffs for those who go to see it.

“Not only do you walk away with an amazing story, but in your ear incredible music.”

Unlike many productions which have Sunday matinees, this one is Saturday night only.

Oktoberfest

Then, with the change in temperatures you may have detected a little "oompah" on the breeze. Debbie Farquhar produces Fredericksburg’s Oktoberfest, and she's proud of it.

“Oompah is definitely in the air. We have four stages of continuous oompah music," she said about this weekend's city-wide event. "We have lots of brats. We have lots of cold beer. We have a great children’s area, and we have a group of local Fredericksburg artists that gather under a tent and sell their artwork.”

Oktoberfest is Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Yanaguana Indian Artist Market

And on both Saturday and Sunday, there’s this at the Briscoe Western Art Museum: the Yanaguana Indian Artist Market

“We have invited over 30 artists this year, that are going to be coming in, they’re going to be selling their work,” says the Briscoe's Jennifer Chowning.

Western Art, Native American style. And music.

"We’ve got a flute player, Ryan Little Eagle.  We have Juan Tejeda and his cousin Armando [who] are going to be facilitating an indigenous jam session. The artists and some of the demonstrations will be in the Jack Guenther Pavilion. And then the courtyard will be filled with the art making.”

While you can pay to go in and see the Briscoe, market admission is free.
