From a symphonic take on a Hollywood blockbuster, to connecting immigrants to art, to a West Side art studio tour, the coming weekend is packed with fun.
First off, you could dial up Jurassic Park on Hulu--so what makes seeing it at the Majestic Theater so special?
"Nobody ever has seen it live to score."
What the San Antonio Symphony's Jessica Anderson is saying is that the movie they're showing has all the audio...except the music.
"That's exactly what happens. They drop out all of the score so the symphony can play it live and there's no competing sound. Seeing the film with the music right there is amazing."
The Symphony's live playing of Jurassic Park starts tonight and goes all weekend. Then Saturday at the San Antonio Museum of Art there's a special program. Here's SAMA's Katie Luber.
"We know that in our city we have so many coming to live here from all over the world."
The program is their It's Art In Any Language event, which is an outreach to immigrants and new San Antonians trying to get their footing here.
"You don't have to speak Spanish to understand Latin American Art," she said. "There's something truly profound about that way that art can truly connect us all."
Saturday morning at 11 they invite all of the city's cultures for a free overview tour of the museum.
"We all really, so firmly believe that art crosses cultural boundaries. It unites people together in ways that the newspaper doesn't, that politics don't. But we think that art is a place where people can find themselves."
Then on Saturday and Sunday--go behind the curtain and see art being made. Here's Bihl House Arts' Kellen McIntyre talking about the On and Off Fred Studio Tour.
"The studios are incredible. Every time you walk through a studio door you don't know what you're going to see. Every single one is magical."
The studios are located on and off Fredericksburg Road. You purchase a catalog with all the studio locations on it, then walk or drive to their studios, and meet the artists themselves.
"It's just a great opportunity to meet the artist, see how they live and work, and to purchase artwork directly from them."
An opening event tonight has food, music and more.
