Brand New New Year's Eve Event Waltzes Into The Tobin

Mark Greenburg

The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts has slipped what they hope will become a new tradition into the city’s arsenal of yearend entertainment. The Strauss Festival starts soon, but the first Strauss highlighted isn’t Richard, it’s Johann.

“...Who influenced Richard Strauss quite a bit,” says the San Antonio Symphony's Music Director, Sebastian Lang-Lessing. He’s talking about that New Year’s Eve event at the Tobin.

“It’s actually three concerts for the price of one. It’s probably one of the most interesting parties in town. Patricia Racette, is starting the evening with a cabaret-style Broadway show. She, accompanied by a piano, is singing new favorites and old favorites.”

Then comes the Symphony.

“We take over with a Viennese concert where she’s singing as well.

And the big Johann Strauss program with the favorite waltzes. And then the party keeps going to midnight and into the New Year, with Rick Cavender and his band.

“So I think it’s a wonderful new tradition that we want to start.”

We have more on the Tobin New Year’s Eve event here.
