Broadway's Tony Award-Winning "American Idiot" Coming To The Majestic

Dec 5, 2013

A hard-hitting multi-Tony award winning musical is coming to the Majestic Theatre.  "American Idiot," the highly-acclaimed musical that was borne out of the seminal Grammy Award-winning Green Day album of the same name, is coming December 13-14.

"'American Idiot' is about three disaffected teens growing up in a place called Jingletown, USA," said Dan Tracy, who plays Tunny in the production. "They’re all trying to find their way to a better life and each of them gets lost in their own way."

Tunny gives huge credit to Green Day front man Billy Joe Armstrong for creating the framework he has the pleasure of climbing every show.

"And it gets deeper and deeper, I mean the show’s really like Shakespeare," Tracy said. "I could talk about it forever. Every time I do it there’s something new that I’ve found."

Tracy said the music is surprisingly Broadway, hearkening back to some of the great Broadway plays.

"He’s got these beautiful melodies, you know, 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' and 'Are We the Waiting,' all of these things are like a song from 'Carousel' or actually a Rodgers and Hammerstein song," Tracy said.

Given the production's edgy premise, he has this request for South Texas audiences.

"I think it’s important to come and see the show with an open heart and an open mind, you know. Just giving it a chance is really important because I think it’s a really complex and beautiful one-act rock opera," he said.

The Majestic Theatre presents "American Idiot," Friday and Saturday, December 13-14.
