Celebrate San Antonio, City's Downtown New Year's Eve Party

Tonight’s downtown party promises to be quite a huge -- and quite a loud -- event.

"Celebrate San Antonio is the city’s New Year’s Eve party," said Phil Nelson, president of the San Antonio Parks Foundation. "We expect to have about 250,000 people here on Alamo Street between Caesar Chavez and Market."

There will be plenty of live music coming from three separate, thematic stages.

"We’ll have the H-E-B Family Stage at the Arneson River Theater. Then at Maverick plaza we’re going to have a Tejano stage, and then our main Budweiser Stage will be right at the archway at Hemisfair Park," Nelson said.

I asked Nelson what an evening's entertainment would set back those who come down:

"Well, it’s free to anybody that wants to come and it’s a fun time for free," he said.

Not everything is free, of course. Food booths and drinks will all be available for purchase. This is not a park-and-ride event, so you’ll have to find parking where you can. Street spaces, if you can find them, are free after 6 p.m.

"The mayor will help us with a countdown,"Nelson said. "The Valero Fireworks display will start at twelve o’clock. They will be shot off right by the Tower of the Americas, and then we have some coming right out of the tower, too."
