City Council Considers Dissolving Commission For Children And Families

The City of San Antonio's Department of Human Services has recommended to council members that a commission dealing with children and families be dissolved.

Formed in the 1980's, the Commission for Children and Families was created to address the needs of parents and their children.

At that time, the city wanted to identify opportunities for learning and growing, making neighborhoods safe, and improving lifestyles and financial fitness.

But times have changed.

"The commission was created almost 20 years ago, and it wasn't focused at all on looking at programs,” said Melody Woosley, interim director of the city's Department of Human Services. “It was really more focused on how to solve some of these issues and it just had lost focus over time."

In its place, a committee would be formed to oversee the various programs that are working toward Mayor Julián Castro’s SA2020 plan.

Woosley said the body would be called the SA 2020 Commission on Strengthening Family Well-Being.

"We're looking really for this commission to provide us recommendations and advice on are these programs successful, is the money being well spent, is the money making a difference?"

The issue will now move to the full city council for consideration.
