The accident happened around 8:00 a.m. at Foster Rd. and Candle Meadow. Bexar County Sheriff’s Lt. Jose Trevino said the SAISD bus was traveling north on Foster when witnesses say the driver appeared to lose control and the bus jumped the median.

“It collided head-on with the Judson School District bus that was going south on Foster," said Trevino. "The San Antonio bus then kept going and collided with the fence of two residences here.”

The unidentified 63-year-old female driver was killed, it’s unknown if a medical condition caused the accident or her death.

SAISD spokeswoman Leslie Price said two of the five students in the SAISD bus were taken to the hospital for observation. The SAISD bus was picking up homeless Judson students living in the SAISD as part of a federal program.

“What you want to avoid is students changing, bouncing, from one school to the other as they’re moving,” Price said. “So if they’re experiencing homelessness we’ll continue to transport them to the school that they’ve been going to regardless of where they’re living in the city.”

There were 59 students in the Judson bus in route to Masters Elementary. None of the students were injured but the Judson Driver was taken to SAMMC as a precaution.

Judson Spokesman Steve Lipscomb said an ambulance accompanied students to the school “so that they could check out the kids in case they started to feel injuries that they didn’t initially feel.”

SAISD is offering grief counseling is to the district’s transportation department and students.

“It’s a very sad day to lose one of our family," said Price. "We’ll find out more details down the road as to what occurred but we do know that we lost a bus driver today."
