Coming Soon: Where Kids Can Play Downtown

Hemisfair Park Area Redevelopment Corporation
Construction for the Playscape at Hemisfair Park is expected to begin in May 2014.

The city's Historic and Design Review Commission has passed the schematic design for the Playscape slated for Hemisfair Park.

The Playscape is the first phase of the overall redevelopment for the park, and will be located at the southwest corner of Cesar Chavez and S. Alamo. Wednesday, the commission reviewed and passed the design, and citizens got the chance to view the plans during a public event at the Magik Theater.

The playground will include more than four acres of opportunities for play and recreational outlets to encourage fitness, interaction and exploration, according to the Hemisfair Park Area Redevelopment Corporation.

The design features courtyards, a community-operated watercourse called an acequia, play villages, and multi-purpose lawns. Construction is expected to begin in May of next year.

Detailed plans for the park can be found here.
