If the bond package passes Brackenridge Park would see some improvements.

Proposed parks projects in San Antonio will be on the agenda when committees evaluating bond projects meet with the public for the first time tonight.

About 14 percent of the proposed $850 million bond would be used to improve parks. There are 59 different parks projects.  Jeff Coyle, a spokesman for the city, says the bond measure would include some big ticket items in the millions of dollars like Hemisfair Park.

“Major improvements to Brackenridge Park –there’s a master plan under development right now so this would fund some of those improvements. Improvements to the Botanical Gardens that’s one of the numerous bond projects where we’re leveraging other dollars besides city tax dollars," he says.

There’s also funding for San Pedro Creek and the proposed Hardberger Park land bridge. City parks in every City Council district would also get upgrades and improvements.

“Most of the time it has to do with the amenities – what we’re doing out there -- new trails, new playground, ball fields, what have you, but ways we can make the parks better. Just like our streets and our sidewalks there’s a lot of need in our parks as well," he says.

This is the city’s third five-year bond project. Projects funded through  the 2012 bond are about 94 percent  complete.  Committees will spend the next three months finalizing improvements to be paid for through the bond before the Council  approves the list.

Voters will approve or reject the bond package  in May. It would not result in a tax increase but continue the current rate voters approved in 2012.

The first of five Bond committee meetings starts at 6 p.m. tonight at the Central Library. Spanish translation will be available.
