Eight More Sentenced In Maverick County Public Corruption Probe

DEL RIO, Texas — Eight more people are headed to federal prison in a public corruption probe involving a South Texas county.

Ex-Maverick County Commissioner Eliaz Maldonado was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison and ordered to repay $173,000. Maldonado pleaded guilty to receiving a bribe in a construction bidding scam since 2010.

Three ex-county workers and four Eagle Pass businessmen were also sentenced in Del Rio, for terms up to 10 years. All pleaded guilty to theft or bribery counts.

At least 16 people have been convicted and sentenced in the latest investigation into Maverick County losing more than $1.3 million.

Prosecutors say a warrant was issued for German Garcia Cano of San Antonio, who owns GGC Enterprises. He failed to appear for sentencing Tuesday after pleading guilty to bribing county employees.
