Electric Cars To Electric Performances: The Weekend's Here!

Electric cars, a sizzling international collaboration, and music that defies definition.  These are just a few of the things that you ought to consider doing this weekend. Let's start with the San Antonio Electric Vehicle Club: they're hitting the road to Boerne's Patrick Heath Public Library.

Here's the library's Sandy Johnston. "Saturday, May 14, here in Boerne 10a.m. to 2p.m., they're going to have science demos for the kids, then they'll have a variety of electric cars."

If you're electric-inclined you can talk to the cars' owners--but does the event have any charge?

"No charge at the electric car meet-up...," Sandy laughed.

Then on Saturday night an event that has its origins back in 2006 in war-torn Beirut. A friend sends a link of a song to Lebanese singer May Nasr. She was quite amazed.

"Oh my God--her voice. It's like she's reaching out to any heart that's yearning."

She quickly emailed that singer, Puerto Rican Lourdes Perez

"I did not expect her to write back," she chuckled.

But she did. This began a long distance correspondence between the two. A year later they met in New York and eventually ended up recording an album together. Now they're touring. Perez says there's a message of peace that runs below the surface of their music.

"It's particularly significant to me that an Arab woman and a Latin American are coming together to make a statement of peace."

They're performing Saturday night at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center.

Then on Sunday clarinetist Kinan Azmeh is performing. His style of music is hard to pigeonhole, but describes it this way.

"Arabic music, jazz, with classical hints, I think."

He and a percussionist and a pianist will fill San Fernando Cathedral with sound.

"Y'know, people should expect a lot of groovy things going on. I think they are up for some kind of geographic and sonic exploration."

Musical Bridges Around the World is sponsoring, and it's free.
