Feminist Film Festival: Scene And Heard

San Antonio's first Feminist Film Festivalkicks off Tuesday, Jan. 19.  They're calling it Scene and Heard--and Pat Jasso says that "scene" is at a well-known venue.

"It's going to be at the Alamo Drafthouse on 410, which is the old Central Park Mall."

It'll be held over two nights, Tuesday and Thursday.

"And it'll be at 6 o'clock on both evenings. There's two films each night, introduction, discussion by local women relating to the subject that the film's about."

The first night focuses on one of the world's most famous young women--Malala Yousafzai, and the doc about her life.

"It's a documentary about the Pakistani teenager who won a Nobel Peace Prize," she explained. "The second film on that night is Maria in Nobody's Land. It follows three Salvadoran women as they flee their country for the U.S. And then on the second night, Alice Walker, who is a Pulitzer Prize Winner...

"...The Color Purple was written by her. This one is called Alice Walker: Beauty and Truth. And then the last film on the 21st is called Obvious Child. And that is a film about a promising young woman whose life is impacted by an unplanned pregnancy.

Jasso says she doesn't want just to entertain women. The film festival has a higher purpose. She wants to motivate women.

"We want them to come away from this saying, 'What can I do? Is there something I can do?'  We're wanting to provide change."
